Claude Monet couldn’t have made it without her: Camille Doncieux (1847-1879), a model since her teens and the mother of his two sons. Who was the pretty and discreet Camille, content to live in the shadow of the artist during his lean years and whose all too brief life (she died at 32, nursed by Monet’s mistress, Blanche Hoschedé) reads like a soap opera? See the many vibrant paintings—famous or forgotten—that Camille inspired.
