For months now, the French government has faced an existential threat over a burdensome fuel tax that unfairly penalized rural and suburban populations, wholly dependent on cars, trucks and tractors for their living. To fight it, nearly a million people signed an online petition and, last fall, a grassroots political movement for economic justice was born. Its members wore high-visibility yellow vests (“gilets jaunes”), a cogent symbol since motorists don it in case of an emergency.
