After the death of Louis XV in 1774, the new King and Queen exclaimed “Protect us Lord, for we reign too young.” Louis XVI was not only young, he was unprepared to govern. He was not the heavy man with limited intelligence as often described in old history books. However, his lack of confidence and inability to make decisions led to his fall. This presentation will first examine how the Old Regime’s absolute monarchy and a tax system that only benefited those who were wealthy led to the outbreak of the French Revolution. Louis XVI’s failure to improve the domestic economy and his unwillingness to reform the country led to the upheaval of the French people.
